The Birth of a CrackBerry

"What do you want for your birthday, " Steve asked casually. I paused, wracking my brain to come up with a special item, to remember something unique I'd been coveting, something worthy of my thirty-fifth birthday. Everything I thought of, cooking classes, or a fancy meal at Le Bernardin, was a repeat of previous years. I wanted something to really celebrate my milestone birthday. On a whim, I threw out something I'd given no thought to: a Blackberry. As I uttered the words, I warmed up to the idea, and started to get excited. The Blackberry would be a perfect gift for my birthday.

I didn't realize how quickly I would get hooked, lured in by that flashing red star to take a peek and see who the latest email was from. Within days, just the feel of the smooth and cool rectangular device in my purse would be enough make me tune out a little from the world as I struggled to resist its invite to pick it up.

Now I'm a full-blown 'Berry addict. After berating Steve for years for his obnoxious habit of disappearing into his Blackberry screen at inopportune moments, I have become his clone. I even find myself emailing him to get his attention! I used to laugh at stay at home moms who replied to my playdate invitations with the tell-tale "Sent from my Blackberry" signature. Now I'm a crackberry just like the rest of them.
